To this I usually explain that I never insist anyone start by taking things away from their diet but instead, start by adding more raw foods to their diet; a simple salad here; a new and adventurous raw dressing or dessert there (raw desserts area huge hit!).
Eliminating certain foods, like comfort foods, right off the bat can leave you feeling deprived, which is the complete reverse of what we want to happen when embarking on a new wholesome and nutritious food journey.
Many people make the mistake of lunging full-speed ahead into a new diet and lifestyle.
They buy all the equipment; radically alter what they eat; tell everyone they know (which can sometimes lead to discouraging criticism from others about new diet choices) only to feel worn-out, isolated and tired a few weeks later.
While some people benefit from drastic changes like this, it didn’t work for me. I didn’t turn into a raw foodist overnight, as many people like to brag. In fact, it was a slow and not always a linear transition for me (some steps forward and a few steps back).
Begin by simply focusing on some raw salads, more raw juices and smoothies and even to experiment with some quick and easy homemade dressings.
Master a few good recipes at every stage; once you have some simple things on hand, you’ll fly to the next stage with ease. Balance for everyone is different. One of my favourite quotes is “Everything in moderation, even moderation.”
So don’t beat yourself up if you fall off track now and again, as long as your taking effort to get more clean, wholesome food in your diet most of the time.

Dear Sarah, I love your wisdom! You know how to talk and respond to people. We certainly need more moderate, open minded and welcoming people like you. You are an inspiration to me. I love your classes and your recipes. Thank you!
Isabelle, thank you so much for your support. It’s always wonderful to have your smiling face in the class audience. :-)
I believe a balanced approach is the only way to make sure the people that are just on the edge, don’t run in the other direction. Baby steps (at first!!)…
